Deputy Director, Surveillance Intelligence, Surveillance, and Technology Division Communicable Diseases Agency

Sae-Rom Chae is a medical epidemiologist with the Intelligence, Surveillance, and Technology Division of Singapore’s Communicable Diseases Agency, where she leads pathogen-agnostic surveillance initiatives, including wastewater and genomic surveillance, and the development of the national surveillance strategy for communicable diseases. Prior to moving to Singapore in 2021, she worked as a hospitalist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City and as a consultant for Resolve to Save Lives. She previously served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer with the Global Water team at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after completing training in Internal Medicine and Paediatrics at the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System. Sae-Rom has worked on numerous outbreak responses in East Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States and has expertise in surveillance systems and water, sanitation, and hygiene. She holds a Master of Public Health degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health where she was a Sommer Scholar. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Paediatrics and continues to see patients at Singapore’s National Centre for Infectious Diseases. As an Adjunct Assistant Professor, Sae-Rom lectures at the School of Public Health at the National University of Singapore. She is a former Fulbright Scholar.
