Dr Aung Kyaw Thu
Head (Exposure and Data Science), National Centre for Food Science, Singapore Food Agency
Dr Aung Kyaw Thu serves as Head of the Exposure and Data Science Branch at the National Centre for Food Science, Singapore Food Agency (SFA). Drawing on dual backgrounds in medicine and science, he has spent the past decade building Singapore’s capabilities in food safety surveillance and risk assessment to inform policy and operational measures. His translational research interests span a broad range of interdisciplinary areas. These include integrating and strengthening food safety and public health ecosystems, designing, and conducting post-market surveillance, total diet studies, and human biomonitoring to assess population exposure to chemicals and pathogenic microorganisms across the food chain, and applying One Health approaches to investigate zoonotic pathogens and antimicrobial resistance. He also works at the intersection of food safety economics and behavioural insights to raise awareness of foodborne disease burden and foster a stronger food safety culture.
Beyond his primary role at SFA, Dr Aung is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the School of Biological Sciences, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is also affiliated with the Department of Food Science & Technology of the National University of Singapore and holds a Visiting Associate Professorship at Universiti Malaya. To date, he has co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and international conference publications.
