Associate Professor Sophia Archuleta is Head and Senior Consultant, Division of Infectious Diseases at the National University Hospital, and Assistant Dean for Equal Opportunities & Career Development, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.

A/Prof Archuleta received her Bachelor of Science from Yale University in 1994 and her M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1998. She completed her internal medicine and infectious disease training at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and is board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases.

She has been an HIV physician since 2003 when she completed her ID training and joined the faculty at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York. There she focused on care of complex patients and first began teaching and supervising learners in the field of HIV medicine.

A/Prof Archuleta joined the ID Division of the National University Hospital in 2008. She established and led the NUH HIV Programme until 2017. In this role, she focused on establishing a person-centered clinical service to better serve people living with HIV; and furthered her passionate commitment to education initiatives such at the Asia Pacific HIV Practice Course and the Health Care Worker HIV Education Series, which aim to build capacity among the national and regional healthcare workforce in the field of HIV.

From 2017 to 2024, she was the inaugural Director of the National HIV Programme, National Centre for Infectious Diseases. Under her leadership, the program engaged with stakeholders to examine the state of Singapore’s national HIV prevention and care continuum, address gaps and develop strategies to address them. Among these, were national recommendations for HIV testing, pre-exposure prophylaxis, antiretroviral treatment and primary care of people living with HIV, as well as the implementation and national roll-out of HIV self-testing.

A/Prof Sophia Archuleta is also a passionate clinician educator and serves as Core Faculty of the National University Health System Infectious Diseases Senior Residency Programme. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of the National University of Singapore, and serves in various educational leadership roles, national & international committees on graduate medical education. Her medical education research interests include accreditation scholarship, international clinician educators, diversity and equity. She is active in teaching learners across health professions and the entire medical education continuum.
