GENESIS


The Global Education Network for Evolving Solutions & Innovative Scholarship (GENESIS) Fund, established by Dean Prof Chong Yap Seng, empowers NUSMed faculty and staff to drive transformative projects in health professions education. By providing strategic funding, GENESIS supports scalable innovations, global collaborations, and high-impact outcomes like keynote presentations and publications, aligning with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine’s commitment to excellence. This initiative fosters thought leadership and elevates NUSMed’s reputation on international platforms, ensuring competitiveness in the evolving global education landscape.


The GENESIS Fund will support projects under the following categories:


Theme 1: High-Quality, High-Impact Presentations at Global Conferences, Seminars and International Board Meetings

Objective

To enhance visibility and engagement on an international stage, participation should be by-invitation and the topics shared and presented must be impactful, positioning NUSMed as a thought-leader in medical and health professions education at key conferences, seminars, and international meetings.

Theme 2: Innovation Projects with Global Impact

Focus: Promoting Health in Medicine

Objective

To support innovative educational initiatives that advance the "Promoting Health in Medicine" agenda across the undergraduate medical curriculum. This initiative seeks to reframe medical education beyond the traditional focus on disease management towards health promotion, disease prevention, wellness, and patient-centred care, in alignment with national healthcare transformation and educational priorities.

Projects should aim to equip future healthcare professionals with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to promote health across diverse populations and care settings. Proposals are encouraged to incorporate interdisciplinary perspectives, leverage emerging educational technologies, and demonstrate potential for scalability, sustainability, and broader impact within and beyond NUS Medicine.

Examples of eligible projects include, but are not limited to:

  • Development of health-focused e-learning resources, e-textbooks, and other educational materials
  • AI-enabled learning approaches and digital innovations that support health education and behaviour change
  • Experiential learning initiatives related to lifestyle medicine, nutrition, physical activity, preventive care, and community health
  • Innovative assessment approaches, including the development of health-focused examination questions and programme assessment strategies using a backward design approach
  • Interprofessional and interdisciplinary educational initiatives that promote holistic and preventive healthcare Projects should demonstrate clear educational value, feasibility, and alignment with the School's strategic priorities. These resources should integrate interdisciplinary perspectives, embrace emerging educational technologies, and support sustainability through scalable, paperless solutions. Projects should aim to attract international recognition and contribute meaningfully to global medical education standards.

Research projects and their associated budgets, including any research components, are NOT eligible for funding.

Funding

Each selected project will be eligible for funding support of up to SGD 20,000.

Grant Duration: The maximum duration for the grant is two (2) years, commencing from the date specified in the Letter of Award.

Evaluation Criteria for Genesis Fund Proposals

Proposals will be assessed based on the following key criteria:

  • Relevance to Funding Priorities: Alignment with fund objectives, such as securing keynote or plenary presentations or publications in top-tier journals.
  • Innovation and Impact Potential: Degree of innovation and ability to position the applicant as a thought leader on international stages.
  • Global Engagement and Feasibility: Clarity and feasibility of plans for high-level international presentations or collaborations.
  • Impact Metrics and Leadership Development: Strength of measurable outcomes, such as visibility in global networks and contributions to discussions.
  • Budget Justification and Financial Prudence: Appropriateness and cost-effectiveness of the proposed budget.
  • Feasibility of Timeline (Theme 2 only): Realism and structure of the project timeline with achievable milestones.
