CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

Dear Colleagues,

Greetings from the Organising Committee of the 5th APMEC 2008.  Once again we cordially invite all our friends and fellow medical educators from Asia and beyond to participate in our 5th Asia Pacific Medical Education Conference (APMEC) from 24th to 27th January 2008 at the National University of Singapore, Singapore. Our APMEC series has gained international recognition as one of the premiere medical education conferences in the region.

We have carefully chosen our theme for our 5th APMEC to be Medical Education in a Flat World  - Trends, Issues, Priorities, Strategies (TIPS). This is very apt as Asia is at the epicentre of globalisation. Intriguingly, the globalisation has a long, glorious history in Asia as knowledge of science, trade and travel spread between the Indian subcontinent, China, South East Asia, Middle East and Europe. Recent globalisation has influenced medical education on several fronts: knowledge beyond borders, patients beyond borders, doctors beyond borders, and diseases beyond borders. Globalisation is taking place with unforeseen rapidity. What are the challenges and opportunities arising from globalisation? How should we, as a community, respond collectively to realise the full potential of globalisation on medical education?

As in our past four APMECs, several world renowned medical educators have been invited and already accepted our invitation to address these challenges, review major issues relating to globalisation of medical education and to run workshops at the conference. Please visit our website at http://medicine.nus.edu.sg/cenmed/apmec5/index.shtml for more details.

For our 4th APMEC 2007, 539 medical educators from 38 countries converged in Singapore.  We hope to attract even more medical educators from the Asian region and beyond to join us for the 5th APMEC.

On behalf of the Organising Committee, I would like to invite you to join us at APMEC 2008 and to submit abstract/s for this Conference.

I look forward to your participation and to welcoming you to Singapore in January 2008.

Sincerely,

Zubair Amin MD MHPE
