This programme of interdisciplinary research examines the ethics and regulation of translational research and innovation with advanced biomedical technologies. Topics examined within this programme focus on the translation research and innovation with stem cells and regenerative medicine products, such as autologous cell therapies. In particular, we have conducted extensive research with international collaborators on the global industry selling products and services as autologous stem cells Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) in Australia, Japan and Singapore. Our international collaborators include scholars from University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, the Australian National University, the RIKEN Institute, and the Berman Institute of Bioethics. We also collaborate with the local scientific community and regulators in Singapore to generate policy-relevant ethical guidance for translational stem cell research and regenerative medicine.  

Our ethical inquiry also extends into medical innovation more generally and the experimental use of non-standard interventions in clinical contexts. We have produced a commentary as part of the CBME Working Paper series for the use of such experimental interventions, including stem cell-based therapies, during public health emergencies and the COVID-19 pandemic.
