Benjamin Chew Medal and Prize in Medical Ethics
The Dr Benjamin Chew Prize was endowed by Dr Chew Chin Hin in 1997 in memory of his father, the late Dr Benjamin Chew.
Candidates are shortlisted based on their combined marks from Phase I to IV of the HeLP course, and a well-written ‘Ethics Essay’. Finalists will be invited for an interview with a panel of judges.
The ’Ethics Essay’ should offer a 1,000 word ethical analysis of a scenario that they have encountered within their clinical placements. The essay should document the case scenario, and identify the key ethical and legal learning points that arose within the case. Essays of particular merit will provide i) a depth of analysis that goes beyond the core learning in the HeLP curriculum and that engages with the wider medical ethics and/or medical law literature, or ii) an engaging reflection on how the case promoted new, personal insights into professionalism standards, attributes or behaviours within medical roles.
No award will be made unless there are candidates of sufficient merit.
Who are eligible?
This award is open to all year 4 students who can meet the shortlisted criteria.
Who decides?
An Award Committee will comprise senior academics from within the Centre for Biomedical Ethics and senior health professionals within NUS Medicine and/or the National University Health System. The Award Committee will make its recommendations on the recipients of the Award to the Board of Undergraduate Studies.
If there should be no suitable candidate in any one year of the course, the Award need not be given.
