Undergraduate
Curriculum

The Centre for Biomedical Ethics is responsible for delivering core teaching in Health Ethics, Law and Professionalism (‘HeLP’) to undergraduate medical students, and to all other health professional students training in nursing, dentistry and pharmacy within NUS.

About

HeLP is a five-year longitudinal programme for undergraduate medical students. The HeLP programme aims to build students’ core understanding of ethical guidelines and legal requirements within medical practice in Singapore. We also aim to help students acquire the skills and professional attributes to make good ethical judgments in their future roles as doctors.

HeLP forms part of an overarching Professional Practice curriculum within which we work closely with colleagues in NUS Medicine to build ethical, legal and professionalism competencies alongside skills in communication, teamworking, and personal and professional development.

The first two years of the HeLP programme within the Professional Practice curriculum are now taught interprofessionally, with medical, nursing, dental and pharmacy students learning together.

Opportunities for Students

Student Research

The Centre for Biomedical Ethics is committed to supporting medical students and other health professional students nurture their wider interests in medical and healthcare ethics. We see our current undergraduate students as the next generation of scholars in healthcare ethics, and we look forward to supporting all students to develop their research interests and to produce academic outputs.

Prizes

Every academic year, CBmE offers an award to medical students. This prize aims to inspire and encourage students in the field of medical ethics, and in developing students’ abilities to reflect on their professional responsibilities. We honour students who demonstrate exemplary commitment to ethical principles, and who wish to contribute significantly to academic medical ethics through their scholarship.
