Profile

Tsutomu Sawai is a Professor (Special Recognition) at the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Hiroshima University, where he directs the ELSI Unit of the Center for Collaborative Science and heads the Uehiro Division for Applied Ethics. He also serves as Program Faculty for the Frontier Development Program for Genome Editing at Hiroshima University and is an Associate Investigator at Kyoto University’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Biology (ASHBi).

Sawai received his Ph.D. in Human and Environmental Studies from Kyoto University in 2016, with his dissertation focusing on the ethics of human induced pluripotent stem cell research. Prior to his current position, he was a Research Fellow and then Assistant Professor in the Uehiro Research Division for iPS Cell Ethics at the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) at Kyoto University from 2014 to 2019, followed by an Assistant Professorship at Kyoto University’s ASHBi from 2019 to 2022.
