Thermoregulation in middle-aged tropical natives with T2D

About the project

Help us understand how tropical heat in Singapore impacts the physiology and muscle function (strength & balance) in both Type 2 Diabetics and healthy adults during and after exercise.

4 main visits:

  • 2 visits will take 2 hours
  • 2 visits will take 2-3 hours

Visits will be conducted at National University of Singapore

  • 1 Institute for Health & M16
  • Centre for Translational Magnetic Resonance Research

Test conducted includes:

  • Exercise sessions
  • Strength and Balance Tests
  • Magnetic Resonance (MRI) Scans

Volunteer Criteria

Gender: Male
Age: 50 to 65 years old
Special requirement:

Other requirements:

  • Healthy or Type 2 Diabetic males
  • Minimally/moderately active
  • BMI < 30kg/m2
  • Non-smoker
  • No implanted pacemakers or electromedical devices
  • No uncontrolled hypertension and claustrophobia (i.e., fear of tight spaces)
  • No previous digestive tract surgery, heat injury, cardiovascular disease, stroke, chest pain during exercise
  • No lower-body injury in the past 3 months, deformities and/or amputations
  • Not routinely exposed to passive heat (e.g. frequent visits to saunas/jacuzzis)

 

Requirements for Type 2 Diabetic volunteers

  • Diagnosed with diabetes for at least 2 years and currently in good control
  • Not presently treated with insulin
  • No diagnosed diabetes-related complications (e.g. proliferative retinopathy, renal disease, or neuropathies)
