Mouse Intervention Platform

Mouse Intervention Platform for Healthy Longevity Translational Research Programme

To facilitate translational research in the field of ageing, the Healthy Longevity Translational Research Programme has set up a Mouse Intervention Platform (MIP), which is aimed at research on healthspan and lifespan extension using adult/aged mice. The purpose of the MIP is to aid translational research using mouse modelling amongst the local research community, with its direction of work being set by individual principal investigators. The MIP has been used to test interventions designed to delay ageing and to acquire longitudinal or cross-sectional data on specific biological aspects of ageing. A team of dedicated in-house researchers at the Centre aid collaborators in frailty index scoring and in measuring other parameters relevant to ageing biology.

Additionally, HLTRP has recently acquired iNSiGHT – a fully-shielded, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) cabinet, used to measure body composition and bone mineral density for laboratory animals. The machine offers fat, lean and bone measurements in-vivo while maintaining the integrity of the animal in a completely non-invasive way. The iNSiGHT scans the animal in less than 25 seconds, requiring simple anaesthesia and therefore allowing for multiple time point measurements of the same animal throughout the intervention.

The Platform is open to providing its services to investigators interested in the MIP and/or the iNSiGHT analyser.
