I agree that grit is an important trait to develop in healthcare, especially for patient care. In addition to focusing on grit at the institutional level, we could look at it on an individual level. The question henceforth is that\u2013How do we develop or strengthen the grit in ourselves? Angela Duckworth proposed 5 ways to develop grit\u2013pursue what interests you; practice; find purpose; have hope; and join a gritty group (Barker, 2016).\u00a0 Personally, I feel that finding purpose plays a large role in developing passion and perseverance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">I would like to share this poem that I wrote after my first attempt on blood taking on a patient. Amidst hectic schedules and difficult tasks in medical school, this promise that I made years ago helped kept my passion and perseverance alive.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">With shaking hands and a sweaty palm<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">I slide the needle in and try to calm<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">And I heave a sigh of great relief<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">As I watch the backflow fill beneath<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Just minutes before, my mentor had asked<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cDo you mind if my student try this task?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">With trusting eyes and a reassuring grin,<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The patient said, \u201cgo ahead, do your thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The trust that you have given to me<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Even though I may now be unworthy<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Inspires me and greatly spurs me on<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">To be a better doctor hereupon.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Notes on Contributors<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Wenqi Chiew is listed as the first author and she wrote this paper.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Funding<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">There is no funding provided.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Declaration of Interest<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">There is no conflict of interest, including financial, consultant, institutional or otherwise for the author.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Barker, E.
