Lambert Schuwirth obtained his MD from Maastricht University. In 1991, he joined the Department of Educational Development and Research there, taking up various roles in student assessment: Chairman of the Inter-university and the Local Progress Test Review Committee, the OSCE Review Committee and the Case-based Testing Committee, and coordinator of the assessment programs for the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences. While still in the Netherlands, he was been advisor on assessment to medical Colleges in the Netherlands and the UK. Since 2007, he has been a full professor for Innovative Assessment at Maastricht University until 2021. From 2011 until 2025, he was Strategic Professor for Medical Education at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia and Chair of the Prideaux Health Professions Education group. Currently, he is the lead for research and evaluation at NewMed, a new and innovative medical school initiative in Australia. Apart from his academic appointments, he is also an advisor to multiple Royal Australian Colleges and the Australian Medical Council in matters of assessment. His current interests include the ethical and effective use of modern technology (including generative AI) in education and assessment. He is owner of a private educational consulting firm and co-director of a Software as a Service educational company that focuses on AI and health professions education.
