Celestial Yap graduated with a medical degree (MBBS) from the National University of Singapore and practiced as a clinician in several disciplines before embarking on her research career. She obtained a PhD from Edinburgh University, United Kingdom, investigating the roles of actin-binding proteins in brain cancer with Sutherland K. Maciver and David J. Price. Subsequently, she was a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Genes and Development Interdisciplinary Group (Edinburgh) and Visiting Fellow at the Department of Physiology, National University of Singapore (NUS).

On return to NUS in December 2005, the Cytoskeleton and Tumour Biology Laboratory was set up to investigate the expanding roles of cytoskeletal proteins in tumour biology, with a focus on mechanisms that contribute to tumour dissemination and tumour cell survival. She supervises research scientists in all levels of training including Masters and PhD programs, postdoctoral research and clinician-scientist programs. She is also keenly involved in undergraduate and graduate education in the disciplines of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing.
