Brief Abstract:
This back-to-basics presentation will review brain matter, histochemical biomarkers, cognitive and functional changes associated with ageing, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. A life course epidemiological perspective is essential in the understanding of the course and progression of MCI and dementia. The topics to be discussed includes: the significance of subjective cognitive decline in the absence of objective cognitive deficits, implications of the new DSM-5 criteria for diagnosis of neurocognitive disorders (NCD), and practical issues in the use of MMSE and MOCA for assessment of global cognition and neurocognitive tests of cognitive domain deficits.
