Gerontology Research Programme (GRP)

The Gerontology Research Programme (GRP) aims to increase current understanding of population ageing and health transition and to provide the scientific information needed for formulating strategies of disease prevention and health promotion in the elderly. This programme was formed to coordinate and facilitate the conduct of multi-disciplinary research on a wide range of research topics in gerontology, spanning the basic, clinical and behavioral sciences.

Under the GRP, multi-disciplinary research groups from all sectors of the healthcare system establish cohorts of elderly subjects, both healthy and diseased for gerontological research, addressing all levels of intervention and care: primary preventive, primary care, hospital, community hospital, and nursing homes.

We have been actively reaching out to the elderly in the community from the South-East to the South-West of Singapore. The GRP was invited by the Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society to participate in their events “Ageing Gracefully @ Chong Pang” on 7 July 2013 and its official opening of THK Social Service Hub @ Bukit Batok East on 29 September 2013. The GRP was given an award for its significant contribution towards their events.

The Gerontology Research Programme’s paper on “Integrated Care Pathway for Hip Fractures in a Subacute Setting” won the prestigious Rajakumar Award for the best overall paper and the best oral presentation by Dr Tan Boon Yeow, representing the team, in the 2nd Asia Pacific Primary Care Research Conference 2010 held on 4th & 5th December 2010, Singapore. The conference was organised by The College of Family Physicians of Singapore.

In order to help improve the skillsets of those who are involved in teaching and facilitating health professional students, our clinical educators could also enroll in the Certificate of Completion in Medical & Health Professions Education (CenMED Certificate Programme) offered by the NUS Center of Medical Education (CenMED). This program aims to help current and aspiring healthcare professionals and education administrators to develop relevant knowledge & skills in contemporary teaching-learning principles, strategies and to learn the underpinning theories effectively. Our Associate Consultants, Dr Lui Yit Shiang, Dr Teng Jia Ying and Dr Soo Shuenn Chiang, have been enrolled into this programme in 2013.
