Bone Marrow<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What are the main <strong>Cellular components <\/strong>of the bone marrow?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>3 major cell lines :\n<ul>\n<li>Myeloid : neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils etc.<\/li>\n<li>Erythroid : red blood cells<\/li>\n<li>Megakaryocytic: \u00a0platelets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>You can work out the functions of these cells; and what may happen if the marrow is unable to produce functioning cells -&gt; \u00a0this leads to specific <strong>clinical manifestations of disease<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>What are the <strong>Major Diseases <\/strong>in the Bone Marrow?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Leukopaenia: Decreased circulating white blood cells (eg. caused by drug related bone marrow suppression &#8211; chemotherapy)<\/li>\n<li>Leukaemia:\n<ul>\n<li>Malignancy of the haematopietic system which are primarily disorders of the bone marrow<\/li>\n<li>Present with widespread involvement of the bone marrow and usually\u00a0with large numbers of tumour cells circulating in peripheral blood<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3. Whoa! There are so many types of leukaemia&#8230;. how to remember?!?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 -&gt; Classify!! &#8230; it&#8217;s not too bad, there are only 4 main types\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Myeloid or Lymphoid<\/li>\n<li>Acute (usually precursor cells &#8211; Myeloid or lymphoid) or Chronic (usually mature cells &#8211; Myeloid or lymphoid<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>eg. Acute myelogenous leukaemia ; Chronic myelogenous leukaemia<\/p>\n<p>How do we know what type of leukaemia we are looking at?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Clinical presentation (see below)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Examining the tissue (eg. bone marrow, peripheral blood)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0How do these <strong>manifest clinically (symptoms)<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute leukaemias: Suppression of marrow function -&gt; work it out based on the cells produced! \u00e0 Need <strong>fast<\/strong> detection and treatment or else rapidly fatal<\/li>\n<li>Chronic leukaemias: Non-specific systemic symptoms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>II. Other organs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apply similar principles to the other organs in the lymphoreticular system; asking specific questions on components; function; major diseases and clinical manifestations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spleen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thymus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mucosa Associated Lymphoid Tissue<\/strong><\/p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/pathweb\/pathology-demystified\/haematolymphoid-system-lymph-nodes\/lymphoid-disorders-approach\/\" target=\"_self\" role=\"button\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tI.
