You will definitely encounter patients with neoplasms, either <strong>benign<\/strong> or <strong>malignant<\/strong>. Pathology plays a central role in the understanding of neoplasia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Imagine this:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mr Chua is a 67 year old smoker with a chronic cough and a history of weight loss.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CT scan<\/strong> of the thorax reveals a<strong> left lung mass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/pathweb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/CT-lung-mass-1ghmzuo-1.bmp\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A <strong>tissue sample (biopsy)<\/strong> is obtained and sent to the pathologist. The pathologist examines the tissue microscopically\u00a0and writes a report (eg. <strong>benign or malignant tumour, tumour type<\/strong>). The clinician needs\u00a0the report to decide on the next step. If the tumour is malignant, the next step is to find out the <strong>extent of disease (stage)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diagnostic imaging<\/strong> is of key importance\u00a0in the staging of malignant tumours. Once tumours are properly staged, decisions can be made on whether they can be removed surgically or whether chemo- or radiotherapy is required.<\/p>\n<p>After the malignant tumour is removed, the pathologist again assesses the tumour and gives a &#8216;how bad is it&#8217;\u00a0report (<strong>prognosis<\/strong>), whereupon the decision on further treatment is made.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>But first things first<\/strong> <\/em>&#8211; you need to understand the inner workings of the cells in order to understand the process of neoplasia &#8211; <strong>what is neoplasia, how does it start; how to name, recognise and classify it<\/strong> before you can understand the effects on the patient.
