Clinical Manifestations of Respiratory Diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<p>Here are some of the symptoms that patients with disease of the respiratory tract can present with:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Nasal symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul> \t\n<li>Obstruction<\/li>\n\n<li>Leakage &#8211; rhinitis, epistaxis (<em>epistaxis may be one of the signs of Nasopharyngeal carcinoma &#8211; there may also be associated tinnitus or &#8216;blocked ear&#8217;)<\/em><\/li>\n\n<li>Snoring (eg. obstructive sleep apnoea)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Cough<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul> \t\n<li>Dry or Productive (nature of sputum is helpful eg. purulent &#8211; think infection; bloody &#8211; think neoplasm; frothy &#8211; think heart failure etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Dyspnoea (shortness of breath)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul> \t\n<li>Many different conditions can cause this, eg. infections (pneumonia &#8211; inflammatory exudates filling alveolar spaces rather than air); respiratory distress syndrome COPD; asthma; interstitial lung disease; pneumothorax; respiratory failure; heart failure etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Chest wall symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul> \t\n<li>Pain &#8211; eg. pneumothorax; trauma; costochondritis; advanced tumours infiltrating parietal pleura (pain receptors present)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Systemic symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul> \t\n<li>General malaise, loss of appetite and loss of weight (tuberculosis; malignancy)<\/li>\n\n<li>Cyanosis (symptom or clinical sign) &#8211; Type 2 respiratory failure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/pathweb\/pathology-demystified\/respiratory-system\/respiratory-function\/\" target=\"_self\" role=\"button\" rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tI.
