WHAT<\/p>\n<p><strong>DEFINE:<\/strong> Neoplasia(\u201cnew growth\u201d) Neoplasm: An abnormal mass of tissue, the growth of which exceeds and is uncoordinated with that of the normal tissues and persists in the same excessive manner after cessation of the stimuli which evoked the change.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Willis (British oncologist), quoted from Robbins and Cotrans\u2019 Pathologic Basis of Disease<\/p>\n<p>In general, the words \u201cneoplasm\u201d and \u201ctumour\u201d are used interchangeably. Neoplasms can be benign or malignant.<\/p>\n<p>2. NAMING NEOPLASMS<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nomenclature\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Neoplasms are named according to the tissue type\u00a0and nature (benign vs malignant). Most tissue types will have both benign and malignant counterparts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/pathweb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Nomenclature2-300x169.png\" alt=\"nomenclature2\" width=\"407\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Note that there are some\u00a0<strong><em>exceptions <\/em><\/strong>which sound benign but are actually malignant!
