Dear Dr Nga,
May I kindly clarify the definition of heart failure on pathology demystified?
In Robbins, the definition is “clinical condition where heart is unable to meet body’s metabolic demands (despite compensatory mechanisms), or is only able to do so at higher-than-normal venous filling pressures.” However, in pathweb, heart failure is defined as unable to meet demands *although* venous filling pressure is raised.
Thank you very much!
Hi FS,
Thanks for the qn. I had followed the definition given in your lecture notes. The definition in Robbins includes compensated heart failure where at raised venous filing pressure there may still be sufficient cardiac output. It appears that in the lecture notes and in pathweb the definition is that of decompensated heart failure.
You may also want to clarify this with the specific lecturer.
All the best!
Dr Nga
