Assistant Professor (Research), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS
Primary Member, NUS Centre for Cancer Research (N2CR)

RESEARCH FOCUS

  • Unraveling the intricacies of cancer sociobiology: Investigating the influence of social relationships among cancer cells on tumor processes and therapy resistance.
  • Elucidating the role of giant cells known as Poly-Aneuploid Cancer Cells (PACCs) in therapy resistance

BIOGRAPHY

Dr Leong Sai Mun obtained a First Class Honours in Biology and subsequently, a Doctor of Philosophy from the National University of Singapore (NUS). He subsequently performed his postdoctoral fellow in molecular neurology (focusing on apoptotic cell death in Parkinson’s disease) in Department of Biological Science, NUS, and then in molecular oncology (focusing on the biology of circulating tumour cells) in National University Hospital (Singapore).

Currently, as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at the National University of Singapore and a member of the NUS Centre for Cancer Research (N2CR), Dr Leong brings forth an extensive academic background in life sciences, encompassing diverse disciplines such as evolutionary biology, natural sciences, and advanced cell and molecular techniques.

In recent times, he has showcased his adaptability by broadening his research horizons into the dynamic domains of game theory and sociobiology. This interdisciplinary approach has empowered him and his team to explore innovative perspectives in comprehending the complex social behaviours exhibited by cancer cells. Presently, his primary focus revolves around investigating how these social dynamics impact crucial cancer processes, particularly the response to chemotherapeutic treatments.
