{"id":9634,"date":"2021-07-08T21:38:47","date_gmt":"2021-07-08T13:38:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/52.77.231.19\/wordpress\/?p=9634"},"modified":"2021-07-08T21:38:47","modified_gmt":"2021-07-08T13:38:47","slug":"research-topic-on-cabbage-is-winning-grads-recipe-for-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/nursing\/2021\/07\/research-topic-on-cabbage-is-winning-grads-recipe-for-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Research topic on cabbage is winning grad\u2019s recipe for success"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><em><strong>This year\u2019s Nursing Research Medallist chose a research topic close to her heart, and hit the jackpot.<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"news-events-captions\">\r\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Tiffany.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9628 size-full\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/Tiffany.jpg 700w, https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/Tiffany-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<div style=\"padding: 10px 15px;padding-bottom: 10px;width: 100%;background: #eee;font-size: 12px\">Tiffany How graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) (Honours) degree and earned the Nursing Research Medal.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-SG\">When it came to a topic for her Honours thesis, Tiffany How chose to explore the effectiveness of cabbage leaf application on the improvement of health outcomes in postnatal mothers with breast engorgement. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-SG\">\u201cBreast engorgement is a common condition that afflicts post-natal mothers,\u201d said Tiffany, \u201cand so I was curious if natural remedies such as applying chilled cabbage leaves to the breast could alleviate swelling and reduce pain for mothers who were already stressed by motherhood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-SG\">Women\u2019s perinatal health is a concern close to Tiffany\u2019s heart as she aspires to work in obstetrics and gynaecology nursing. It is also personal to her as her sister, who was pregnant at the time she was deciding on her thesis topic, had heard about the natural therapy in an antenatal talk by a well-known lactation consultant, who recommended it as a treatment for breast engorgement. \u201cI wanted to find out if the treatment was effective as it could potentially help my sister post-delivery,\u201d Tiffany said. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-SG\">Her systematic review found a few primary studies with varying results, but unfortunately, the data was inconclusive. \u201cResearch on natural therapies to treat breast engorgement show potential, but evidence is sparse and my study recommended that hospitals and clinics could conduct more rigorous research in this area,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-SG\">Her work earned her a Nursing Research Medal from the school, given to the student with the best Honours thesis.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"quotebq\"><i class=\"fa fa-quote-left fa-2x\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i> <br>\n                        <p>\u201cChoosing a review topic that was linked to her life experiences and was of great interest to her served her well.\u201d<br><br><i class=\"fa fa-quote-right fa-2x fa-pull-right\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/p>\n                        <footer>Assoc Prof He Honggu<\/footer>\n                    <\/blockquote>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-SG\">Tiffany said she is grateful for the help of her thesis supervisors Dr Siti Zubaidah and Associate Professor He Honggu. She attributed the modules on nursing research and evidence-based healthcare for increasing her knowledge and strengthening her skills in healthcare research. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-SG\">\u201cTiffany analysed the evidence on the use of cabbage leaves to treat engorgement from various perspectives and through the lens of breastfeeding mothers. This set her thesis apart and earned her the Nursing Research Medal,\u201d said Dr Zubaidah.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-SG\">Associate Professor He said Tiffany\u2019s project was well-conducted and deserving of the Medal. \u201cThe first systematic review and meta-analysis was reported in a very succinct and straightforward way, with review findings indicating more rigorous methodology is needed to evaluate cabbage leaf application. Choosing a review topic that was linked to her life experiences and was of great interest to her served her well,\u201d said Associate Professor He. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-SG\">Tiffany hopes to publish her thesis and is currently working on the manuscript. \u201cMy goal is to continue to raise awareness of perinatal health issues that affect women in our communities,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"news-events-captions\">\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Tiffany-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9682 size-full\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/Tiffany-2.jpg 700w, https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/nursing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/Tiffany-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<div style=\"padding: 10px 15px;padding-bottom: 10px;width: 100%;background: #eee;font-size: 12px\">Tiffany and her Interact Club members at junior college, where she realised she loved to volunteer and help others.<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div>\r\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-SG\">Why did you choose to study Nursing?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n<span lang=\"EN-SG\">After my A-levels, I looked into different courses. I wanted one that could interest me and in which I could grow and continue to do in the long term. Will the job sustain my interest? Growing up, I\u2019ve always liked helping people. I joined volunteer groups, took on many projects, and have a really deep passion for volunteering. My experiences include volunteering with the elderly living in rental flats with the Interact Club when I was in junior college, and volunteering with kidney failure and dementia patients with the Rotaract Club in NUS.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/span>\r\n<p><b><span lang=\"EN-SG\">How was the last year for you?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\r\n<p><span lang=\"EN-SG\">My CCP (Consolidated Clinical Practice) was very unpredictable, as schedules and plans kept changing depending on announcements on measures by the government to control the virus spread. My TTP (Transition to Practice) was also a pretty confusing time as protocols and workflows had to be established, and we had a fear of resuming clinicals when the nation had just entered a circuit breaker. Have a close group of friends to rely on in good and bad times.
