Here are some tips gleaned from our work with Health Care Professionals.<\/p>\r\n<h4>Have Patience with \u201cNo Patients!\u201d: Tips for Recruiting Users for Health UX<\/h4>\r\n<p>One of the rude shocks of a User Experience Researcher first working in healthcare is almost no access to the real<br \/>\r\nusers \u2013 the patients. It\u2019s fair to say that my work in telehealth is nothing without users! So I\u2019m sharing here some<br \/>\r\ntips for gaining access to patients, gleaned from my 5 years of working in a healthcare setting and with Health Care<br \/>\r\nProfessionals (HCPs).<\/p>\r\n<p>Firstly, patient access is a negotiated affair:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>It takes trust<\/li>\r\n\t<li>And trust takes time<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>When you first ask for patient access, there are all kinds of replies. But at its core is:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>We (the HCPs) are not ready<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Our organizational processes are not ready<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>What the real issue is, is that the HCPs in charge have never done this kind of work before, and they are<br \/>\r\nunderstandably risk averse whenever it comes to any kind of patient contact.<\/p>\r\n<h6>What do you do?<\/h6>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li><strong>Accept it.<\/strong>\r\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\">\r\n\t<li>Have patience when there are no patients.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>it takes time for them to trust you.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>being pushy will merely raise shields.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Do one or two projects with no patients first.\r\n\r\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square\">\r\n\t<li>when using patient proxy data, the quality of your user experience data will naturally be<br \/>\r\ncompromised.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>advise the stakeholders in advance.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>and keep these initial projects short and low-risk\/low-cost so that everybody gets to dip<br \/>\r\ntheir toes in without the water boiling over.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Realize that even when the HCPs you liaise with seem ready, they aren\u2019t really ready.<\/strong>\r\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\">\r\n\t<li>With time and trust, you may be given some patient access.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>This is not a time for celebrating yet, as often this access will still be highly constrained.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>\u201cyou can interview patients, but you can\u2019t observe them!\u201d<\/li>\r\n\t<li>\u201cyou can give them test kits, but they can\u2019t actually use them!\u201d<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Have patience and let the data speak for itself.<br \/>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>get good\/convincing data with what access you do have.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>show the truth.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>gain trust when stakeholders realize this information is really really useful.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>When they are ready cooperate with them at all times to ensure that existing protocols and guidelines <\/strong><strong>are still being met<\/strong>\r\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\">\r\n\t<li>Do consent forms.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Observe any and all guidelines HCPs may place on you. Even adhoc ones, because HCPs are also<br \/>\r\nlearning as they go.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Store data securely \u2013 there is no such thing as a simple data leak in healthcare.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p>Final note: Creating patient advocacy groups may help cut through some of these barriers more efficiently, but that requires a basic trust and experience with patient voice that has to be experienced by the healthcare organization first.<\/p>\r\n<p>Click here for: [<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/nuhscg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/12\/Have-Patience-with-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">downloadable PDF<\/a><\/strong>]<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"User Experience researchers often have difficulty gaining access to patients.
