{"id":2301,"date":"2019-11-17T06:49:42","date_gmt":"2019-11-17T06:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/nmsc\/?p=2301"},"modified":"2022-10-13T10:15:09","modified_gmt":"2022-10-13T02:15:09","slug":"remembermelivingwithdementia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/nmsc\/remembermelivingwithdementia\/","title":{"rendered":"Post concert: In the shoes of a dementia patient"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With dementia being a growing problem in Singapore\u2019s ageing society, a concert supported by the\u00a0NUS Mind Science Centre\u00a0(MSC) was held on 28 October\u00a0to raise awareness about the experiences of people living with the condition and the impact on their caregivers and family. \u201cRemember Me\u201d traced the emotional journey of Amah Lucy as she struggled to come to terms with dementia and its consequences for her family and sense of identity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.nus.edu.sg\/highlights\/shoes-dementia-patient\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/nmsc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/dementia_concert-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h6>Amah Lucy (seated, middle) struggling to remember her caregiver Ma Li (extreme left)<\/h6>\n<p>The theatrical music performance comprising songs, drama and educational dialogues featuring\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nusmedicine.nus.edu.sg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine<\/a>\u00a0Professor Kua Ee Heok \u2014 a professor in Psychiatry and Neuroscience as well as a Senior Consultant Psychiatrist at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nusmedicine.nus.edu.sg\/pcm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NUS Psychological Medicine<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 was written by NUS alumnus Mr Edgar Liao. The lead character, Amah Lucy, was played by veteran actress Catherine Sng, whose stage and television repertoire includes a role in Channel 5\u2019s\u00a0<em>Growing Up<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/nmsc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/dementia_concert-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2302\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"inline-caption\">Prof Kua (centre) taking part in one of the performance&#8217;s educational dialogues<\/h6>\n<p>Before the concert held at the Esplanade, the 1,100 attendees took in an exhibition showcasing research studies conducted by MSC. These include Age Well Everyday (AWE), an evidence-based volunteer driven community programme that aims to reduce the risk of dementia in senior citizens through health education, mindful awareness and physical exercise. AWE is based on the research findings of the ongoing 10-year Jurong Ageing Study, which looks at how genetic, biological, physical, social and environmental factors influence the elderly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/nmsc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/dementia_concert-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2303\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"inline-caption\">An exhibition held before the concert allowed\u00a0attendees to learn more about MSC&#8217;s research<\/h6>\n<p>Such efforts to raise community awareness and support about mental health issues in Singapore are much welcome as the country is projected to be ageing faster than any other society in the world by 2050, with mental disorders being one of the largest contributors towards early death and disability.<\/p>\n<p>One in 10 people above the age of 60 in Singapore has dementia, according to the Institute of Mental Health. For those above the age of 85, the proportion goes up to 50 per cent.
