As Singapore’s population ages, the number of people with dementia is expected to increase rapidly in the next 10 to 20 years. Thus, prevention is key, said Dr Feng Lei from NUS Medicine’s Department of Psychological Medicine.

Dr Feng added that local research had found that the risk factors for dementia included heart diseases, diabetes, depression, and factors that mitigated the risk of dementia included regular exercise, regular activities that simulate brain activity, active social interactions, having a spouse and drinking tea.

However, he added that it is important to conduct further research to help more elderly enjoy good health and sustain a good quality of life.
