New Head, Department of Pathology, NUH and NUS Medicine

The School is pleased to announce that Associate Professor Tan Soo Yong will be appointed as Head, Department of Pathology, National University Hospital (NUH) and Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS Medicine) with effect from 1 April 2016.
Associate Professor Tan is currently Senior Consultant, Department of Pathology, NUH. He obtained his MBBS at NUS Medicine and thereafter underwent postgraduate training in Forensic Pathology and Histopathology in Singapore and in the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom (UK). Qualifying in both forensic and histopathology, he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) and a Diplomate of the Society of Apothecaries of London. Associate Professor Tan further obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) from Oxford University, UK.
Prior to joining the National University Health System (NUHS), Associate Professor Tan was Senior Consultant, Department of Pathology, Singapore General Hospital from 2006 to 2016. He was also an Associate Professor in the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. His previous appointments included Director, SingHealth Tissue Repository and Advanced Molecular Pathology Laboratory.
As a haematopathologist with active research interests in T-cell lymphomas, Associate Professor Tan is a member of the International Lymphoma Study Group and contributes to the WHO classification of haematolymphoid neoplasms. He sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Clinical Pathology and Biopreservation and Biobanking. He is concurrently Senior Principal Investigator and Head of the Advanced Molecular Pathology Laboratory at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), A*STAR. His national appointments include Chairman, Residency Advisory Committee (Pathology); Senior Consultant in both the Regulatory Policy and Licensing and the Manpower Standards and Development Divisions of the Ministry of Health. His international appointments include Executive Board Member and Chairman, Biobanking Subcommittee, Asian Network of Research Resource Centres and International Advisor of the Royal College of Pathologists for the West Pacific region. A committed educator, he is also a Visiting Professor to the University of Malaya and the Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences.
NUS Medicine also places on record our grateful thanks and appreciation to Professor Teh Ming for his contributions as Head, Department of Pathology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS Medicine) and National University Hospital (NUH) since 1 July 2004. Professor Teh’s leadership and achievements have continued the Department’s eminence as one of the leading Pathology Departments in the region. The Department of Pathology has a heavy and complex teaching load for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The undergraduate components consist of the teaching of Pathology to Medical, Dental and Pharmacy students. Prof Teh has provided leadership in the undergraduate medical curriculum review. Under Prof Teh’s leadership, our residents receivedeffective post graduate training as reflected in the high pass rates of the residents in the final examinations for the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of the United Kingdom and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologist of Australasia. Prof Teh also leads the Department in the successful organisation of numerous major workshops with international participants from MD Anderson Cancer Centre and Harvard Medical School. The department has a comprehensive range of clinical services involving routine histopathology, cytopathology, immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology (including a Diagnostic Molecular Oncology Centre (DMOC)), tumour tissue registry and electron microscopy. These services expanded significantly under his leadership, and provided greater facilities for teaching, research and clinical activities and enhancing the international reputation of the department. As part of international quality assurance, Professor Teh led the Department to accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), Joint Commission International (JCI) and International Organisation for Standardisation. Professor Teh will continue to contribute to the NUHS tripartite mission as Senior Consultant and Professor of Pathology in the Department of Pathology and remain an invaluable resource to NUHS and Singapore.
