In May 2017, US sports brand NIKE launched a campaign to have world elite runners beat the sub-two-hour marathon. Dr Ivan Low, research fellow and exercise physiologist from the Department of Anatomy at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, said that elite runners would require a huge improvement from their personal bests to beat the record from a physiological perspective. “It is more realistic for a less-trained individual who has not realised his or her full potential to improve by 2.5 per cent, but these elite runners have probably hit the plateau phase of improvement. To go faster by two to three minutes is very significant,” he said.
