About 70,000 people in Singapore have dementia, according to a large in-depth study funded by the Ministry of Health and the Singapore Millennium Foundation of the Temasek Trust.

While there is no cure for dementia, there are ways to prevent or delay its progression, especially in the early stages or before it sets in.

One way is to control one’s high blood pressure, which could prevent a stroke, and in turn reducing the prevalence of dementia. Working full-time or part-time can also reduce the risk of dementia.

In addition, dementia expert Professor Kua Ee Heok from NUS Medicine’s Department of Psychological Medicine said cognitive decline can be prevented or delayed with diet, exercise, mindfulness practice, art activities, music reminiscence and gardening. These activities keep the mind limber.
