Women are at a higher risk of suffering from fractures compared to men due to osteoporosis, or major loss of bone mass. They experience bone mass loss from the age of 35 at a faster rate compared to men, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Spine fractures for women are the bigger problem, as it would result to backache and hunched backs, said Dr Chionh Siok Bee.

To prevent bone loss, women and men are advised to avoid smoking and overconsumption of alcohol. They are also advised to consume at least 1g of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium, and carry out weight-bearing exercises daily.
