Dr Yew Tong Wei, Consultant from NUH’s Division of Endocrinology, recounted his experience with a 89-year-old patient Mr Lim. Mr Lim has diabetes and hypertension, but he remains extremely positive and lives independently. However, when his son who is in his 50s suffered a stroke and became bedridden, he was dejected, hoping that he were the one suffering from stroke instead. Dr Yew advised him to confide in close friends and relatives, and ensure that he stays healthy and strong, to be able to support his son at this juncture. The consultation concluded with Dr Yew offering his patient a hug, which he said, comforted himself as much as he hoped it had comforted Mr Lim.

Dr Yew is also an assistant professor at NUS Medicine’s Department of Medicine.
