Congratulations to our student CHONG Ruifen Joyce on receiving the Best Graduate Research Publication Award 2022.

NUS scientists have discovered a novel property of a protein found in human lungs which could lead to the development of biologic drugs to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a debilitating, progressive lung disease that is one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

The research was led by Associate Professor Ge Ruowen (left) from NUS Biological Sciences and published in the prestigious scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in January 2022.

The research team worked with Professor Fred Wong (right) at NUS Pharmacology, to conduct laboratory studies to examine the effectiveness of delivering recombinant ISM1 protein directly via droplets into the airway. The researchers observed a reduction in lung inflammation, suppression of emphysema development, and restoration of lung functions. These findings lend support to the development of ISM1 as a potential treatment for COPD.

Congratulations to Professor Wong Wai-Shiu, Fred (left) and Associate Professor Tan Chay Hoon (right) on winning the Pharmacology Society (Singapore) Awards 2022. Professor Fred Wong was awarded the PSS Research Excellence Award for his prolific and outstanding contributions to the field of respiratory pharmacology research. Associate Professor Chay Hoon Tan was awarded the first PSS Education Excellence Award for her prolific and outstanding contributions to the field of pharmacology education.

Prof. Dean Ho, Director of the Institute for Digital Medicine (WisDM) at NUS Medicine and Joint Professor at Department of Pharmacology, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The only Singapore-based honouree among the 2021 AAAS Fellows, Prof Ho is recognised for his distinguished contributions to the fields of artificial intelligence, digital medicine and nanomedicine, particularly for drug development and combination therapy design.
