Stifling heat in Singapore could ease as onset of S-W monsoon brings breezier weather

Some relief from the stifling heat is expected in the coming weeks with the onset of windier conditions during the south-west monsoon season. The Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS), under the National Environment Agency, said on June 2 that winds over Singapore are expected to strengthen and blow from the south-east or south-west in early June. The Republic was previously in the throes of the inter-monsoon season, when winds were light and variable. The light winds and occasional clear skies had made hot afternoons common, the weatherman told The Straits Times.

In April last year, Magwe Region’s Chauk recorded a temperature of 48.2 degrees Celsius, while the mercury in Yangon rose over 40 degrees. At least 1,473 people reportedly died in Myanmar from heat-related causes that month. That was almost six times more than in 2010, when 260 heat-related deaths were recorded during the summer months, according to the Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS).

Step Into the Future: Experience Singapore’s Climate in 2050

In celebration of the NUS Medicine’s 120th Anniversary and organised under the NUSMedSci Alliance Brew outreach programme, the Heat Resilience & Performance Centre (HRPC) under NUS Medicine held an outreach event at Cedar Girls’ Secondary School on 17 October 2025, where students were invited to explore the science of heat and human heat resilience through three exciting experiences: the Experiential Climate Pod, the Heat Resilience Booth, and a presentation by Cedar alumna Dr Sharifah Badriyah, Research Fellow at HRPC.
