Professor Ling is world-renowned for the development of responsive, brain-controlled, artificial arms as part of DARPA’s Revolutionising Prosthetics Programme. He led the development of the DEKA arm, the world’s most sophisticated arm and hand robot prosthesis, which progressed from conceptualisation to full FDA approval within 7 years. This technology has enabled fully paralysed patients to directly control prosthetic robotic arm/hands to perform important tasks of daily living. He will share his journey of innovation and future challenges in this area of research in this talk. Professor Ling is also a leading expert in the field of traumatic brain injury and pharmacy on demand, an innovative drug solution which enables miniaturised and mobile drug manufacturing.
