Healthcare faces challenges from growing and ageing populations, rising levels of chronic illness, constrained budgets and health inequalities. Simultaneously, the Internet and big data analytics have begun to transform healthcare. When this technology is combined with improved outcome measurements and systematic behaviour change techniques, Learning Healthcare Systems could emerge. Healthcare leadership is hence urgently needed. Physicians must become effective healthcare leaders to influence the care of individual patients, performance of diverse clinical teams, and the direction of healthcare organisations and beyond. Effective healthcare leadership is pivotal as leadership improves clinical outcomes, improves provider well-being by promoting workplace engagement, and reducing burnout.
