Dr Traspas graduated with his PhD under the supervision of Professor Bruno Reversade and Associate Professor Lai Poh San (Department of Paediatrics). Dr Traspas has a first author paper published in Nature Genetics, a renowned journal. He also co-authored a further four papers in reputable journals. At the European Human Genetics Conference 2022, Dr Traspas was awarded with the Fellowship of Excellence for one of the 5 best abstracts submitted by early career investigators. He also received the Early Career Award from the Vienna Medical Academy for an outstanding presentation in the field of translational genetic research.\r\n<p>The title of his thesis is &#8220;Loss of FOCAD, operating in the SKI mRNA surveillance pathway, is responsible for a syndromic form of pediatric liver cirrhosis&#8221;. End-stage liver diseases are increasingly becoming a major health and economic burden to society, with no effective drugs or therapies to combat these pathologies to this date. Liver cirrhosis is traditionally believed to be caused by environmental insults such as poor diet, viral hepatitis or alcohol abuse. Nevertheless, little has been done to explore the existence of possible underlying genetic causes.<\/p>\r\n<p>Though his research using Mendelian genetics, Dr Traspas pinpointed a cause for paediatric liver cirrhosis to mutations in a rarely studied gene called FOCAD. Using the state-of-the-art CRISPR\/Cas9 technology, he generated zebrafish lacking the FOCAD gene which phenocopied the human disease, revealing a signature of altered mRNA degradation processes in the liver. Using patient-derived primary cultures and FOCAD inactivation in human hepatic cell lines, Dr Traspas discovered that FOCAD deficiency compromises the SKI mRNA surveillance pathway, a molecular quality control mechanism that assists the translation of mRNAs into proteins by destroying transcripts that are faulty.<\/p>\r\nCurrently, Dr Traspas is a Scientist in the start-up Altos Labs (San Diego, California, USA). This new biotech company gathers a community of renowned scientists, clinicians and leaders from both academia and the biomedical industry with the common mission of reversing disease and injury. Dr Traspas&#8217;s work focuses on using cellular rejuvenation programming techniques to restore liver health and resilience. He is motivated to use his biomedical expertise gained during his academic training to develop ground-breaking therapeutic approaches for diseases with unmet medical needs.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The Too Joon Chew Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Prize was established in 2022 by the Too family in memory of their late father, Mr Too Joon Chew. A cash prize valued at $1000 will be awarded to the top three PhD graduates with the most outstanding work done in their respective field of research.<\/p>\r\n<p>We are proud to feature the three winners of the 2023 Too Joo Chew PhD Prize here!<\/p>\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong>Dr Goh Ya Hwee Jasmine<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Dr Goh Ya Hwee Jasmine graduated with a PhD from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, under the main supervision of A\/Prof Edward Chow Kai-Hua (Cancer Science Institute of Singapore and Department of Pharmacology). She has also been awarded the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine Best Graduate Research Publication Award 2023. In addition to these awards, Dr Goh has also clinched the Best Poster Award at the 2022 NCIS Annual Research Meeting (NCAM) and Best Oral Presentation at NCAM 2021. Dr Goh has two first author papers and co-authored a further two papers in reputable journals.\r\n<p>Her PhD thesis title is &#8220;Rational Design of Optimised Therapeutics Against Relapsed\/Refractory Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma&#8221;. Dr Goh showed that resolution for Quadratic Phenotypic Optimisation Platform (QPOP) experimental combination design in cancer cell line models can be reduced without compromising drug combination optimisation. Her research demonstrates the feasibility of optimising drug combinations within a clinically actionable timeframe and forms the foundation for a prospective clinical trial to evaluate Quadratic Phenotypic Optimisation Platform (QPOP)-guided combination therapy in relapsed\/refractory non-Hodgkin lymphoma (RR-NHL). In addition, Dr Goh identified patients who were more heavily pre-treated as a subgroup who will benefit most from QPOP-guided treatments, providing a basis for patient selection and recruitment for a future clinical trial investigating the clinical benefit of QPOP.<\/p>\r\nDr Goh is working as a scientist in Cargene Therapeutics, local biotech company, where she is part of a team working on developing oligonucleotide-based therapeutics. She is inspired by the goal of developing a novel therapeutic that can improve patients&#8217; lives and draw daily motivation through a scientifically-stimulating environment with shared camaraderie between colleagues.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/graduatestudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2023\/07\/Kalpana-Ramnarayanan-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\r\n<strong>Dr Kalpana Ramnarayanan<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Dr Kalpana Ramnarayanan graduated with a PhD from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, under the main supervision of Professor Patrick Tan Boon Ooi (Department of Physiology). Dr Ramnarayanan has a first author publication in the high-impact peer-reviewed medical journal, Cancer Discovery, which covers clinical research pertaining to the field of cancer studies. Her first author publication titled &#8220;Single-Cell Atlas of Lineage States, Tumor Microenvironment, and Subtype-Specific Expression Programs in Gastric Cancer&#8221; was featured in The Straits Times newspaper for its translational impact to better treatment options in gastric cancer patients.\r\n<p>Dr Ramnarayanan&#8217;s PhD thesis title is &#8220;Dissecting the Heterogeneity of Gastric Cancer at the Single Cell Level&#8221;. Gastric cancer heterogeneity represents a barrier to disease management. Dr Ramnarayanan generated a comprehensive single-cell atlas of gastric cancer (&gt;200,000 cells) comprising 48 samples from 31 patients across clinical stages and histologic subtypes and identified increased plasma cell proportions as a novel feature of diffuse-type tumours. She also uncovered distinct cancer-associated fibroblast subtypes with INHBA-FAP-high cell populations as predictors of poor clinical prognosis. Dr Ramnarayanan&#8217;s findings highlight potential origins of deregulated cell states in the gastric tumour ecosystem.<\/p>\r\nDr Ramnarayanan is currently a Senior Research Scientist at Mirxes, a biotechnology company headquartered in Singapore, specialising in producing diagnostic solutions for the early detection of diseases.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<strong>Dr Samira Sadeghi<br \/>\r\n<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Dr Samira Sadeghi graduated with a PhD from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, under the main supervision of Assistant Professor Chester Lee Drum (Department of Medicine and Precision Medicine TRP). Dr Sadeghi has five first author papers published in reputable journals.\r\n<p>Dr Sadeghi&#8217;s PhD thesis title is &#8220;Translational Applications of Thermostable Exoshells: A Detailed Study&#8221;. Through her research, she demonstrated that encapsulated enzymes remain highly stable in vitro such that Thermostable exoshell (tES) could potentially be used as a carrier for its oral delivery. Her discovery is exciting news given challenging nature of delivery and stabilization of active enzymes in the field of nanotechnology.<\/p>\r\nDr Sadeghi is motivated by the challenges faced in translational and creative projects and loves thinking out of the box to define projects or experiments in order to solve an issue or even start something from scratch. She is now working for Protea, a technical consultancy specialising in the life sciences industry and pharmaceuticals.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In 2015, a donation from Lilly-NUS Centre for Clinical Pharmacology Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Eli Lilly and Company led to the establishment of this annual award for students who have excelled in Pharmacology studies and training. A cash prize of $250 and a gold medal will be awarded to the PhD student with the Best PhD Research Thesis in Pharmacology.<\/p>\r\n<p>Dr Xu Jingru has been awarded the Lilly Medal and Prize in Pharmacology for 2023!<\/p>\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/graduatestudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2023\/07\/Xu-Jingru-290x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\r\n<strong>Dr Xu Jingru<br \/>\r\n<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Dr Xu Jingru graduated with a PhD from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, under the supervision of Associate Professor Edward Kai-Hua Chow and Associate Professor Gautam Sethi (Department of Pharmacology and NUS Centre for Cancer Research (N2CR) TRP).\r\n<p>Dr Xu&#8217;s research focuses on the development of a nano-based delivery platform for enhanced cancer treatment. During her candidature, Dr Xu had published one first author paper and a co-author paper in reputable journals. Dr Xu had also presented in three international conferences. She has since gone on to publish a further two first author papers in nanodiamond research.<\/p>\r\n<p>Her PhD thesis title is &#8220;Nanodiamond-based Drug Delivery Platform for SALL4-driven Hepatocellular Carcinoma Therapy&#8221;. Dr Xu established an AI-assisted platform for rapid evaluation of drug sensitivity and demonstrated that nanodiamonds can help to target the &#8220;undruggable&#8221; targets in Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) &#8211; a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Possible applications of Dr Xu&#8217;s AI-assisted platform include the selection of SALL4hi patients that might respond to specific class of drugs.<\/p>\r\nDr Xu likens her PhD journey to an exciting adventure. The dedication she put into overcoming each challenge encountered gave her a unique and meaningful significance to her journey, making it an unforgettable and fulfilling experience.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The Yeoh Seang Aun Prizes (in Tuberculosis and Infectious Diseases) were donated in 2013 by Dr Yeah Swee Choo. A cash prize of $1,000 each is awarded to one medical undergraduate student and one postgraduate student annually.<\/p>\r\n<p>Ms Chun Ye Yu, Jade has been awarded the Yeoh Seang Aun Prize in Tuberculosis and Infectious Diseases for 2023!<\/p>\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/graduatestudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2023\/07\/Chun-Ye-Yu-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\r\n<strong>Ms Chun Ye Yu, Jade<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Ms Chun Ye Yu, Jade is currently a NUS Medicine PhD student under the supervision of Assistant Professor Chris Sham Lok-To and Associate Professor Sylvie Alonso (Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Infectious Diseases TRP).\r\n<p>Jade&#8217;s research focuses on investigating how the diverse capsular polysaccharide (CPS) of Streptococcus pneumoniae stimulates the host&#8217;s innate and adaptive immune responses differently. Given that CPS plays a critical role in the pathogenicity of this bacterium and is a key target of existing vaccines, she is greatly inspired by its potential to make significant contributions to the development of improved preventive and therapeutic strategies in this field. Jade is the 1st runner-up in poster presentation at the 2022 Annual Biomedical Scientific Congress (ABSC) organized by the NUSMed Graduate Students&#8217; Society and has also participated in the the 10th FEMS Congress of European Microbiologists (2023) held by the Federation of European Microbiological Societies.<\/p>\r\n<p>She has published the article titled &#8220;Influence of glycan structure on colonization of Streptococcus pneumoniae on human respiratory epithelial cells&#8221;. Jade&#8217;s first author article is featured on Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), a prestigious peer-reviewed multidisciplinary scientific journal.<\/p>\r\nStreptococcus pneumoniae, also known as the pneumococcus, is the primary bacterial cause of community-acquired pneumonia, resulting in nearly a million child deaths worldwide each year. One of the most well-established virulence factors of pneumococcus is the capsular polysaccharide (CPS), which provides protection to the bacteria against host immunity. Due to its clinical significance, CPS is the target for existing pneumococcal vaccines. Although epidemiological studies suggest that serotypes influence pneumococcal carriage, how the CPS composition and configuration impact colonization remains unclear.
