TenangAI: Empathy Meets Innovation

TenangAI is transforming mental health support with accessible, empathetic AI tailored to Gen Z and Millennials in Indonesia and Asia Pacific.

Salma never expected her path as a psychologist to lead her to the world of AI. For five years, she worked closely with Gen Z, listening to their everyday struggles—academic stress, family pressures, and the anxieties of an uncertain future. It was clear that these young people weren’t waiting for life-altering crises to seek help anymore; they wanted support for the daily challenges that weighed them down. However, Salma noticed a worrying trend: the number of people reaching out far outweighed the available resources.

Research shows that Indonesia, a country of over 270 million people, has fewer than 3,000 psychologists. That’s one psychologist for every 90,000 people. This stark gap highlights the urgent need for accessible mental health solutions, especially for the 100 million Gen Z and Millennials navigating life’s pressures.

Many of them need help multiple times a week, but the system is stretched far too thin. “This isn’t sustainable,” Salma thought, realizing that traditional approaches alone wouldn’t be enough.

Determined to address this, Salma teamed up with Andre Huang to reimagine mental health care using artificial intelligence.

By 2024, Nesya had reached over 50,000 users across 37 provinces in Indonesia. Recognizing the scale of the issue, TenangAI partnered with governments, schools, and universities to create a broader impact. These collaborations not only brought mental health care to more young people but also enabled mapping and preventative strategies to tackle emerging trends.

For Salma, this isn’t just about technology—it’s about safeguarding the emotional health of a generation. “As a psychologist, I believe the ‘Golden 2045’—Indonesia’s vision for its centennial—can only be achieved if the government takes mental health for young generations seriously. The best way to accelerate this is with artificial intelligence.”

TenangAI’s journey is about more than addressing Indonesia’s needs. As Southeast Asia’s first AI-driven mental health platform, the company has plans to expand into the Asia Pacific region by 2026. Mental health is a global issue, and Gen Z’s behaviors, stresses, and aspirations are universal. With a growing user base and a mission to make mental health care accessible for all, TenangAI is proof that innovation, when guided by empathy, can change lives.

The name “Tenang,” which means calm, reflects the heart of this mission. As PT Tenang untuk Dunia (“Calm for the World”), the company is driven by more than business goals—it’s about making a tangible difference.

Mental health is the foundation of human well-being, and with the right innovations, empathy can scale globally. Through Nesya, Salma and Andre are not just transforming mental health—they’re building a legacy of care and hope for generations to come.
