We conduct a variety of research-relevant education and training programs for our academy\u2019s members. Most of these programs are for the education of aspiring and early-career clinician scientists. The aim is to equip them with a solid foundation in basic research skills such as the proper designing of research studies, analysing and putting research data in perspective, and writing up the results for dissemination. Programs include forums in grant writing and structured courses in research methodologies, biostatistics, evidence-based review approaches, clinical research protocol development, and scientific communication. Courses are taught by professionals from the respective fields of practices and are usually delivered via classroom lectures. To supplement the lectures, we also conduct workshops for intensive hands-on learning where useful.<\/span><\/p>

All structured courses are presented in small, usually progressive modules to suit clinicians at different levels of their research endeavour. For example, our biostatistics courses are offered at basic, intermediate, and advanced levels. The modules are repeated every semester, so interested candidates can opt for the courses that best suit their level of experience, and also when convenient. The self-directed training approach offers busy clinicians the flexibility to learn at their own pace and progress over as many modules as desired to reach their educational goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We conduct peer-to-peer grant writing forums once or twice a year. These interactive forums are designed to motivate and inspire early-career clinician scientists in the writing of competitive grant proposals, such as for the biannual National Medical Research Council Clinician Scientist Awards. The forum gathers together early career clinician scientists to meet with highly established senior clinician scientists who have themselves secured millions of dollars in research funding, built up large research teams and managed effective inter-disciplinary collaborations, often spanning across countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Lectures, forums, and workshops are conducted on Saturday mornings. Class attendance is voluntary but require prior registration (typically ~ 30 per class). These aim to give our clinician scientists vast exposure to ongoing medical research in Singapore and beyond. Weekly research seminars are hosted by early- and mid-career clinician scientists from among ourselves, in topics that cater to a diverse range of interests in basic, translational, clinical, and implementation research and innovation. Seminars are delivered by scientific investigators cover a wide selection of topics \u2014 from basic single-cell research to technology innovation and translation, through to clinical trials.
