Cancer is characterized by the uncontrolled division and growth of abnormal cells in the body. It can occur in almost any tissue or organ. Even though the cause of many cancers remains elusive, genetic factors, environmental exposures (such as tobacco smoke and carcinogenic chemicals), radiation, and viral infections are known cancer inducers. Electromagnetic fields (EMF) have been shown to inhibit the growth of many types of cancer cells. It can interfere with cellular proliferation and promote the induction of apoptosis (programmed cell death). EMF may also increase the sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapy through the increased calcium signalling and chemo drug entry via calcium-permeable transporters. This may improve the efficacy of chemotherapy treatment in cancer patients.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\"breast_cancer-removebg-edit\"\n\t\t

\n\t\tBreast Cancer\n\t<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\"OncoFTX\n\t

The BICEPS laboratory has developed the use of magnetic therapy directly targeting the tumour. Our work has shown that magnetic therapy is effective to enhance the potency of DOX in reducing tumour size and increasing cancer cell death via apoptosis. Direct magnetic exposure impairs growth of breast cancer cells whilst not affecting non-malignant breast cells. Furthermore, we have also found that magnetic exposure reduced invasiveness and migratory capacity of TRPC1-high (a calcium channel) breast cancer cells. Collectively, our work on breast cancer highlights the utility of magnetic therapy as a tool to impede breast cancer progression whilst also enhancing chemotherapy.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
