I am Craig, a PhD student in the BICEPS laboratory. As a clinical doctor previously, I was interested in type 2 diabetes and other metabolic disorders that occur frequently in the community. I feel that by being in the lab and researching pulsed electromagnetic fields allows me to do that as we study how PEMFS can improve biomarkers that are adversely affected by type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I also look forward to researching other areas in PEMF treatment including its role in obesity as it is implicated in various other metabolic, cardiovascular and rheumatological diseases.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>

I am an exercise believer and also love doing exercise. In order to learn more about how exercise improves human health by stimulating skeletal muscle and how electromagnetic stimulation mimics the effects of exercise, I applied for an internship to the BICEPS team. Under the training of BICEPS team, I am attempting to put up a protocol for skeletal muscle phenotyping and investigating the different effects of PEMF on skeletal muscle proliferation under different parameters.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I like to travel around Singapore while I\u2019m not working in the lab. This is my first time visiting Singapore. I \u00a0joined the BICEPS lab as I was intrigued by the multi-faceted applications of electromagnetic field in various disease indications. I have particular interest in exploring the ability of PEMF to stimulate stem cell secretome to enhance neural protection and regeneration in the hope that PEMF can one day be used for neurodegenerative indications.<\/p>\n

Since visiting the BICEPS lab during my Master\u2019s internship, I\u2019ve been intrigued by the multi-faceted applications of pulsed electromagnetic fields in health and disease. I am particularly interested in its effect on the aging population and how we can exploit this technology to improve the general well-being of many. Moreover, I am interested in exploring the potential of electromagnetic therapy as an adjuvant to chemotherapy to improve breast cancer treatment.<\/p>\n

With a BS\/MS in Biomedical Engineering and Science, Technology, and Public Policy and a passion for medicine and research, I aspire to bridge the critical gap between clinical medicine and research as a future Physician Scientist. For my gap year, I applied as a Fulbright Research Fellow in the BICEPS Lab due to the diverse therapeutic potential of PEMF therapy and the passionate multidisciplinary BICEPS team. During my time here, I plan on exploring the neuroprotective potential of PEMF stimulation in Alzheimer\u2019s Disease models, hopefully bringing PEMF treatments of neurodegenerative diseases one step closer to clinical practice.<\/p>\n
