A donation from the Khoo Foundation to the Department of Surgery, National University of Singapore (NUS) has set a milestone in the teaching and training programme for surgeons in Singapore and the Asia Pacific Region.<\/p>\n

Tan Sri Khoo Tech Puat was a man of vision and one of the legendary business brains of Asia, and he was also an active philanthropist. The donation is utilised to establish a prestigious, world class Advanced Surgery Training Centre located at the Kent Ridge Wing of National University Hospital (NUH).<\/p>\n

\n\t\tMission and Vision\n\t<\/h1>\n

Mission<\/h4>\nTo establish a simulated and technology-advanced training centre where surgeons can better their surgical skills and knowledge to their maximum capability.
\nTo ensure that each patient is given world-class healthcare through the intensive and comprehensive training sessions that surgeons undergo.
\nTo serve as a regional training hub for the facilitation of the evolving surgical knowledge and experience.\n

\n\t\tHistory\n\t<\/h1>\n

The Khoo Teck Puat Advanced Surgery Training Centre (ASTC) is one of the many legacies of the late Tan Sri Khoo Teck Puat. In 2006, the Department of Surgery at the National University of Singapore received a generous gift of S$7 million from his estate and in 2008 the Centre was established. The Centre’s vision is to be a leading surgical training institute which seeks to raise the current benchmark by providing superior surgical education that brings safer and better healthcare for every patient.<\/p>\n

In the last decade, workshops and courses from various disciplines in surgery have been held, in Singapore and overseas, educating doctors, medical students, medical practitioners, nurses and healthcare workers, all with the goal of providing better patient care with low complications and mortality. Since its inception in 2008, ASTC has hosted more than 800 events with close to 20,000 local and international participants from various surgical specialities and more than 2,000 officials from government agencies, ministries and academic centres worldwide have visited the Centre.<\/p>\n

The Centre has constantly strived to provide a high-tech platform for surgical training and its high-tech educational tools and curricula have been featured in local and international media. To this end, strong partnerships with universities and R&D centres have the common goal of developing new surgical tools and programmes to further the education of both young and experienced surgeons, ultimately to provide better patient care.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
