Death rates worldwide are still highest among people unvaccinated against the virus, said Tikki Pang, a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore’s medical school and co-Chair of the Asia Pacific Immunization Coalition.

“This is a disease of the unvaccinated — look what is happening in Hong Kong right now, the health system is being overwhelmed,” said Pang, the former director of research policy and cooperation with the World Health Organization. “The large majority of the deaths and the severe cases are in the unvaccinated, vulnerable segment of the population.”

Vaccine hesitancy continues to pose challenges in COVID-19 vaccination efforts. But there are ways countries can increase vaccine uptake, according to a coalition that aims to boost vaccine confidence in Asia-Pacific. The Asia Pacific Immunization Coalition, which makes use of evidence-informed research, policy, and advocacy to increase immunization resilience and vaccine confidence in the region, recently published a paper together with MSD and L.E.K Consulting that explored what worked and what was missing in communication strategies to boost COVID-19 vaccinations in the region. The report included interviews with immunology and public health experts from India, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

“Vaccines play a crucial role in creating stable and healthier societies. It takes a global approach to ensure vaccine equity across all nations, only then we can overcome this health crisis and build preparedness to face bigger pandemics.”

“To complement strengthening health systems, it is vital that we in the health community respect people’s views and engage with them. Our work is grounded in gaining an understanding of those who are skeptical and doubtful about vaccines. We are looking to understand the role of human emotions at the root of this doubt and dissent, to better understand communities and their fears, and how to build mutual trust.  We have an opportunity to engage and build trust at this moment in the pandemic – if we get it wrong with vaccine confidence now, we will live with the impact for a long time. If we get it right, we can emerge from this crisis better prepared for a new future.”

The Coalition is committed to ensuring that healthcare systems are up to meeting these challenges in delivering vaccines equitably, and that the people in the Asa-Pacific region truly believe that vaccines are safe, effective and a key foundation of healthy societies and nation building”
