Associate Professor Choolani Mahesh Arjandas has been appointed as Head, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G), at the National University Hospital (NUH) and NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, with effect from 1 October 2019.
Assoc Prof Choolani is currently Senior Consultant, Department of O&G at NUH and Associate Professor at NUS Medicine. Assoc Prof Choolani is well established in the research and education arena at both institution and national level. He joined the department in 1997 and has been an integral part of the institution. In particular, as Co-chairman of the NUS Leadership in Academic Medicine Programme (Clinician Scientist) from 2005 to 2009, he set up the Clinician Scientist Unit in NUS Medicine with the aim to encourage younger clinicians to embark on a Clinician-Scientist career. He also held key appointment as Chairperson of Teaching Faculty of the NHG-NUS Clinician Leadership in Research Programme.
Assoc Prof Choolani succeeds the outstanding leadership of Professor Yong Eu Leong, who has headed the Department of O&G for over 11 years. Prof Yong’s leadership has led O&G to be one of the preferred choices for women’s health care in Singapore. Under his leadership, O&G has consistently delivered the best clinical quality with cost efficiency despite exponential growth in patient volume annually. Together with the research team, Prof Yong has groomed a group of award-winning clinician scientists focused on women’s health whilst upholding a high standard of education and training in the department.
Once again, congratulations to Assoc Prof Choolani on his new appointment, and our deepest appreciation to Prof Yong for his invaluable dedication to the department.
