The inaugural Wong Hock Boon Society Research Symposium was initiated by the Wong Hock Boon Research Society to showcase the work of the Society’s student researchers and recognise those who have achieved high quality research. It also serves as a platform for the transfer of scientific knowledge between clinicians and students, hence, adding value to every student’s research experience.

Held at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine’s flagship building, the Centre for Translational Medicine (CeTM) on 22 November 2014, the symposium was graced by Professor John Wong, Chief Executive of the National University Health System (NUHS), Isabel Chan Professor in Medical Sciences and Senior Vice President (Health Affairs) for the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Students from M1 to M5 were present at the symposium and a total of 18 oral and 19 poster presenters participated in the Scientific Competition with Distinction and Merit awards given to the top performers. Four scientific talks in the field of Infectious Diseases, Psychiatry, Oncology and Surgery were also delivered by a group of established clinicians who showcased their latest works in their respective medical fields. Professor Lawrence Ho, Chair, University Medicine Cluster, Head, Department of Medicine and Head, Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, delivered the plenary lecture on “How medical students can contribute to the impact of medical innovation”, inspiring the students to become better researchers.
