A rousing close to Playhouse 2015

NUS Medical Society’s annual Playhouse extravaganza took place on Sunday, 13 December 2015 at the NUS University Cultural Centre. Playhouse is an annual student drama competition that draws on the creativity and unique talents of medical students from the five phases of the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Medicine). Started in the 1970s, it has since become the largest and most exciting arts event in the NUS Medicine academic calendar and a symbol of the thriving arts culture here at the School. The friendly competition emphasises the importance of strong batch identities, which are fostered through the process of preparing for the hour-long performance.
This year, more than 1,200 students, faculty, alumni, and parents gathered on a cozy Sunday afternoon for a series of high quality, exciting plays by the students. Over the last 4 months, students worked hard and sacrificed their weekends with the single aim of putting up a successful production.
The 2015 edition of Playhouse saw the inception of the Playhouse Shield that will be given out to the Best Overall Play of every year. The shield will be engraved with the winning class and title of the winning play of the year, and displayed prominently on the walls of the NUS Medical Society Student Lounge.
The Best Overall Play award for Playhouse 2015 went to the Year 4 production entitled “Limbo”, which received sterling reviews from both judges and the audience. Congratulations to the Class of 2017 for winning Playhouse 2015!
The Best Actor award went to Shaam Achudan for his portrayal of Adrian in the Year 5 play, entitled “When there’s a wail, there’s a way.” Interestingly, the Best Actress award was tied between Vera Toh and Tabitha Luann Abraham, who played Susan and Melissa respectively in the Year 4 play, entitled “Limbo.” Overall, the productions this year were of exceedingly high standards and guests and audience enjoyed themselves thoroughly.
