Frequently Asked Questions on Graduate Admission

General Information

Where can I find information on research scholarships available?

For information on the various research scholarships available, please refer to here. Application for research scholarships can be submitted together with their online admission application.

Are there any admission interviews and/or tests?

Shortlisted applicants, especially those who applied for the research scholarship, may be required to attend an interview. Wherever possible, the interview will be held in the applicant's country. The usual periods of overseas interviews will be in March/April for the August intake and August/September for the January intake.

Is it compulsory to submit the GRE scores?

Yes, it is compulsory for applicants (except NUS & NTU graduates from relevant disciplines) to submit GRE scores. Please quote '0677' for the University code. There is no Department Code.

Is it compulsory to submit the TOEFL scores?

Yes, it is compulsory for applicants to submit TOEFL scores. Please quote '0677' for the University code and '9086' for the Department Code.

Applicants whose medium of university instruction is in English can be exempted from the TOEFL requirement. Applicants would have to provide a letter from their university to indicate that the medium of instruction is in English.

Is there an age limit for admission to a graduate program?

There is no age limit. As long as you meet the minimum admission requirements, you are eligible to apply. Each application is considered on its own merits.

If I am paying for my own study, what kind of documentary proof of financial support do I have to submit?

The documentary proof of financial standing should be in the form of a bank statement for international students and for applicants working in Singapore, a copy of their recent pay slip and bank statement. If you are going to be supported by a sponsor, we will need a letter of confirmation from your sponsor (the sponsor needs to indicate his/her relationship to you), together with the financial status proof. You must have sufficient funds to support your study [estimated cost of living (S$30,000) plus Tuition Fees] for at least two years.

How do I fill up the part on my proposed research topic in the application form if I don't have a specific topic in mind?

You need not indicate a specific topic if you don't have one in mind. You should, however, indicate the research area(s) that you are interested in. You may refer to the Research@SoM for the list of research interests of all the staff members in the various departments in the School.

For the field on proposed supervisor(s), can I leave it blank as I don't know any staff in your School?

You need not indicate any proposed supervisor(s) if you are unable to at the point of application. However, it is helpful that you indicate the area of research that you are interested in to facilitate the application process.

When will I know the outcome of my application?

Research applicants will be informed of the results of their applications by early June for the August intake and by early November for the January intake.

System-Related Information

I have forgotten my application password and the answer to the secret question needed to reset the password. What should I do?

Please email your enquiry to gdhelp@nus.edu.sg with the following information:

  1. Full Name (as submitted in the online application)
  2. Date of Birth
  3. Degree applied for (example: MSc/PhD)
  4. Faculty/Department applied for (example: Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine/Biochemistry)

Upon receiving the above information, GDHelp shall then inform our IT administration to verify and retrieve the answer to your secret question so that you can proceed to reset the password.

I have submitted a request for password via the online admission system. The new password was supposed to have been emailed to me. It has been over 24 hours and I have yet to receive any email notification of the new password.

The email notification will be sent to your email address as you have indicated in the online admission system. To verify that your email address has been indicated correctly, please email your enquiry to gdhelp@nus.edu.sg with the following information:

  1. Full Name (as submitted in the online application)
  2. Date of Birth
  3. Degree applied for (example: Master's/Ph.D./Bachelor's)
  4. Faculty/Department applied for (example: School of Design & Environment / Real Estate)

Upon receiving the above information, GDHelp shall then inform our IT administration to verify and retrieve the answer to your secret question so that you can proceed to reset the password.

For the field on Cumulative Average Point (CAP)/GPA, how should I fill in if my Bachelor's degree marks are all in percentages?

Since your institution has a different grading system, you may leave this field blank.

I am unable to upload all my documents as there is a limit for uploaded documents.

The total maximum upload limit is currently 2mb. Please reduce the file size if possible. Alternatively, you may email the supporting documents indicating your name and application number to medbox1@nus.edu.sg.

I am unable to make the online payment.

We would advise that you check with your bank to ensure that online payment services have been made available for your account.

Alternatively, you may consider making arrangement with your family or friend who is able to help you make the online payment on your behalf or opt for other modes of payment:

  1. For Local Students: Complete the relevant Application Fee Form and make payment by NETS at the Student Service Centre (located at Level 1, Yusof Ishak House) during operating hours.
  2. Complete the relevant Application Fee Form and send it together with a bank draft (drawn on a bank in Singapore in Singapore dollar) made payable to "National University of Singapore". Please write your name, mailing address and program applied for at the reverse side of the bank draft.

If you are unable to obtain a bank draft in Singapore dollar, you may submit a bank draft in US dollar of USD18.50 (for S$20 fee) or USD37 (for S$40 fee) respectively. The amounts in USD include bank charges which will be incurred by the University to process the bank draft.

How do I know if the payment is successful?

If the payment is successful, you will be directed to a confirmation page. Alternatively, you can check directly with your bank for confirmation on the transaction of payment.
