About Us
The Children's Medical Institute at the National
University Hospital is a tertiary paediatric centre equipped to
provide comprehensive and specialized medical services for neonates,
children and adolescents seeking personalized care for acute and
chronic illnesses.
The University Department of Paediatrics was first established in
1962 and moved from the original site at the Singapore General Hospital
to National University Hospital (NUH) in 1986. It has recently been
renamed The Children's Medical Institute.
Approximately 50,000 outpatients, 15,000 emergencies
and 6,000 inpatients are seen each year. There are 90 inpatient
beds with full investigatory facilities. There are specialist wards
for Paediatric Intensive Care and Neonatal Intensive Care. In addition
there is a Paediatric Inpatient Cancer Centre and Children's Kidney
Centre.
The Children's Medical Institute has pioneered
paediatric transplantation in Singapore performing the first bone
marrow transplant in 1983, the first renal transplant in 1989 and
the first cadaver liver transplant in 1991.
Built on a strong and firm foundation of clinical and laboratory
research, The Children's Medical Institute has a long tradition
of providing comprehensive care to children from Singapore and the
region.
Located next to the National University of Singapore
it is one of the main resources for training the next generation
of doctors and specialists.
