On 27 April 2007, we introduced the “Art of Medicine” Series. This series is held quarterly. It covers the ethical and professional issues in every medical scenario that a doctor will normally find himself / herself in for example “end-of-life" considerations, domestic / sexual / substance abuse, police / legal / government involvement, conflict of interests, etc as well as important knowledge about the available support services that, unfortunately, many doctors are not aware of.
Through this series of talks, we also hope that senior and experienced clinicians can share with us their views on the “Art of Medicine”. We envisage these quotes from William Osler as topics around which a speaker might be able to share his / her thoughts with us:
1. The practice of medicine is an art, not a trade; a calling, not a business; a calling in which your heart will be exercised equally with your head. Often the best part of your work will have nothing to do with potions and powders, but with the exercise of an influence of the strong upon the weak, of the righteous upon the wicked, of the wise upon the foolish.
2. The young physician starts life with 20 drugs for each disease, and the old physician ends life with one drug for 20 diseases.
3. The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.
4. Care more for the individual patient than for the special features of the disease. Putting yourself in his place, the kindly word, the cheerful greeting, the sympathetic look - these the patient understands.
