Clinical - Division of Neurosurgery

Known to be one of the most technically demanding surgical specialties, our Neurosurgical team has been able to consistently achieve excellent clinical outcomes which are of international standards while continuing to participate actively in both extensive clinical research as well as education both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Active participation in clinical trials has also enabled the centre to stay at the forefront of neurosurgery research and collaboration. In addition, leveraging on the latest technology inclusive of intra-operative computerized neuronavigation guidance systems, advanced 64-slice CT scanners, MRI with functional imaging, interventional suite and virtual reality imaging, our neurosurgeons are able to provide a high level of expertise covering a comprehensive range of complex brain and spine surgeries. We also strive to provide personalized care tailored to the individual needs of all our patients.

Diagnostic Modalities

Besides the conventional imaging, there are also available to the Neurosurgeons a wide array of the most advanced diagnostic imaging modalities. These include the following:

  • 3-Tesla MRI scanner with diffuser tensor imaging capabilities and functional brain mapping
  • Computer tomographic angiography with 3D remodeling
  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
  •  Multimodality virtual reality system for preoperative planning
  •  Intraoperative neuroendoscopic and stereotactic guidance and targeting systems

We provide a comprehensive range of open and minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures both for brain and spine conditions.

Surgical Neurooncology:

  • Benign and malignant brain tumour excision – gliomas, meningiomas, glioblastoma
  • Cerebral metastases excision
  • Gamma Knife Radiosurgery

Vascular Neurosurgery:

  • Spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage – basal ganglia haematomas
  • Clipping of cerebral aneurysm
  • Embolisation of cerebral aneurysm, arteriovenous malformations (AVM), dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF)
  • Excision of vascular malformations – AVMs, cavernomas
  • Gamma knife radiosurgery
  • Cerebral vascular augmentation and revascularization procedures – carotid endarterectomy, extracranial-intracranial (ECIC) bypass (high flow and low flow)
  • Decompressive craniectomies for cerebral infarction

Skull base surgery:

  • Skull base tumours – vestibular schwannomas, cerebropontine angle meningiomas
  • Sellar tumours – Pituitary adenoma, craniopharyngiomas
  • Cranial facial procedures for tumour excision and cerebrospinal leaks

Functional Neurosurgery:

  • Deep brain stimulation – parkinson’s disease
  • Microvascular decompression for Trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm
  • Gamma knife radiosurgery
  • Needloscopic sympathectomy (for palmar hyperhidrosis a.k.a sweaty palms)
  • Epilepsy surgery including vagal nerve stimulator
  • Nerve release/decompression procedure – Carpal tunnel release, Ulnar nerve release
  • Nerve and muscle biopsies for diagnostic purposes

Paediatric Neurosurgery:

  • Paediatric brain tumours eg pilocytic astrocytomas, medulloblastoma haemangioblastoma, germ cell tumours
  • CSF diversion procedures – shunts, endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV)
  • Neuroendoscopy – diagnostic and therapeutic

Head Trauma neurosurgery:

  • Intracranial hemorrhage – subdural haematomas, extradural haematomas, contusion, diffuse axonal injuries (DAI)
  • Intracranial pressure monitor
  • Decompressive craniectomies

Spine surgery (Conventional and Minimally invasive spine techniques):

  • Degenerative pathologies – prolapsed disc, spinal canal stenosis
  • Oncologic pathologies – intradural and extradural spine tumours
  • Developmental pathologies – Chiari malformations and neural tube defect (NTD) such as myelomeningoceles
  • Spinal trauma
  • Spinal stabilization/instrumentation
