Local and international research
scientists now have the opportunities to train under the direct
guidance of a team of experienced senior research and clinical
scientists, and will be taught by and work with ophthalmologists.
Our academic staff will be involved in the mentoring, and the
training will be based at
Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI)
or other collaborating institutions.
The aim is to provide high
quality training to prepare applicants to become an independent
investigator. During the training, candidates will be taught to
develop his or her own research project, to write competitive grants
to fund the project, and to administer and conduct the research in a
timely fashion. It is envision that the project will ultimately
result in manuscript publications in peer-reviewed journals.
The candidates will also have the
chance to collaborate with clinical ophthalmologists from the major
ophthalmic institutions in Singapore, including the Singapore
National Eye Center, National University Hospital, Tan Tock Seng
Hospital, and the Singapore Polytechnic. Opportunities are also
available to initiate collaborations with renowned international
research institutions such as Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins
University, Moorfields Eye Hospital and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute,
ensuring an international perspective in the research training.
The core facilities offer a wide
variety of research projects in molecular and cellular biology, and
the close integration of clinical and epidemiological research at
NUS and SERI provides the opportunity to translate these basic
science discoveries into new diagnostic and treatment modalities.
